Make That a Double
Make That a Double
Long time no blog!
I’m back with much to share, so grab a snack and get comfortable because you know I like to be wordy.:)
I received a cost estimate for the plastic surgery I recently posted about and looked into. For a tummy tuck and brachioplasty (arms), the total comes to just under ,000. When I heard this amount, I cried, right there on the phone with the kind lady who was giving me the news. I was most fearful of disappointment, and there it was.
I went through thoughts of “Why did I even bother to go? Surely you knew no matter what amount it was that you couldn’t afford it.” Well, true enough, but I think what was important was that I faced my fear and went anyway. I did that, and it wasn’t easy. I believe that this dream of mine isn’t done just yet. I know that I deserve to have this surgery, and that I will have it someday. I refuse to give up hope about this!
This past weekend Mark and I headed to Springfield, Mo. for the Cohick half marathon. It was to be his second half marathon and my 7th (I think?)
We headed to the Bass Pro Shop for packet pick up and I had been tossing the idea around that maybe I’d run the full marathon. My thoughts were that this was a unique opportunity to run another without having to go through training again to do so, and also that with ideal weather, I had a shot at bettering my finish time from the Chicago Marathon last month. I wasn’t exactly certain that I had the ability to run the distance again; I hadn’t done a long run past 9 miles in a month and wasn’t sure how far I’d be able to go out there. But, I decided, upon Marks encouragement as well as a few friends, that I’d go ahead and give it a go.
I won’t lie and say I wasn’t a bit apprehensive about running the full the next morning. I was. I wasn’t nervous, though, which was very uncharacteristic of me! We had learned earlier about Team 413, and decided to join. All you have to do is buy a shirt and wear it during the race and you’re a member. I love the idea of being able to help anyone behind me in a race keep their mindset positive, so I was excited to wear the new gear.
We headed out race morning bright and early and arrived in time for the pre-race service that was being held. It was a nice way to start the day and I’m glad we were able to be a part of it.
Pretty soon we were lined up at the start and ready to head out. Mark and I ran the first 3/4 mile together and then the course split off- half marathon runners turned left, marathon runners turned right. With a quick kiss and a “do your best”, we headed off in opposite directions. I heard Mark say something like “It’s like the crossroads of life!” and everyone around was cracking up and I just shook my head and grinned.
]]>
The weather was about 40 degrees; a crisp, sunny, fall morning. I felt fantastic. There were maybe 5 runners in front of me and 5 behind. I knew this was going to be a very relaxed atmosphere with so few marathoners. I liked it very much!
I noticed immediately that this was a winding and hilly course through neighborhoods, mostly. It was beautiful but I did have some concern about the hills, even though I wasn’t struggling at all on them.
Click here if you want to see that I’m not exaggerating about the course.
The miles came and went, and as I approached mile 8, I met the mother of all hills. I walked up a good portion because I knew it wasn’t worth zapping my energy long term just to make it up there quickly.
Around mile 11 I came upon a fellow TEAM 413 shirt runner wearing a fish hat. I can’t remember what I said, but we began talking immediately and learning more about one another. Her name was Lesley, and she told me that she is on state 38 of running a marathon in all 50 states! Incredible! We stayed together for several more miles, and she even waited for me to duck into a portapotty, take off the long sleeved shirt I had under my TEAM 413 shirt, and put myself back together. For the record, it’s not easy to take off sweaty, fitted running gear when you’ve got on a belt full of Gu, an armband for your iPod, and a hat on. Oh, and you’re in a portapotty and trying not to let anything on you touch anything around you. But I digress…
I had mentioned that this was my second marathon and that I had run Chicago last month. She said she had run there as well, and went on to say that she was wearing some type of a “National Enquirer” type costume thing. I remembered seeing her immediately, and where we were on the course! Now that is nothing short of astonishing for a number of reasons: 1. I rarely notice things around me when I’m running. 2. If I do notice, I don’t remember noticing. 3. There were 36,000 runners that day on the course! What a crazy thing to have discovered. I’m still processing what that is about, but nonetheless I’m excited to have a new friend from Texas and I hope to be able to race with her again someday.
We eventually seperated out there, as she was trying to pace herself a bit and I was in the mindset that I was going to run out of steam sooner or later, and I may as well take action while I was able to.
I began really laboring around mile …17, maybe? Then by 19 I began eating and drinking a lot more than I did in Chicago. I felt better every single time I forced something down my throat and even though I had no desire to eat, I kept taking what was offered at tables along the way. (In case you’re wondering, it was gummy bears, Jolly Ranchers, pretzels, goldfish crackers, licorice, jelly beans, half a banana. Not in that order and not too many of any one thing.)
I saw Mark and his parents between 22 and 23, I believe, and I felt so loved to see his dad cheering and jumping around and them standing there with their arms full of goodies so I could eat and drink! It was so kind of them to drive down and spend the day showing support and I know that Mark felt the same way I do about this. Mark finished his second ever half marathon in 3:05 and then spent the next 3 hours supporting me and cheering me on as well as helping me take an ice bath and get our gear loaded up to drive home. I think it goes without mentioning that I’m the luckiest girl in the world to have him in my life!
At mile 24 I asked someone what time it was. I was told 12:06. I knew that to finish in 5:30 that I’d have to keep less than a 12 pace to the end. But, I kept having to walk, so I just walked as fast as I could and ran in spurts when I was able to. About 3/10 of a mile to the finish, I came upon 2 women. One to my left, one to my right. We were all exhausted but I told them ”We can do anything for a few minutes!” and we all began running faster toward the finish line. As I neared the turn to enter the finish chute, I heard the announcer over the loudspeaker call someone’s time at 5:26. I screamed and threw my arms up and took off. I couldn’t believe I was going to clear 5:30 after all! I heard Mark screaming “Go Carrie, go! Finish strong!” and I gave it my all. And I nearly puked. Thankfully, I didn’t.
This race was not anything spectacular compared to the experience I had in Chicago, but it was a great race and I am thankful I was able to run it well and make a new friend along the way. Official finish time was 5:26:28. I placed 20th in my age group and I am proud to say I beat my pr by 26 minutes!
**I began typing this early in the day. Frequently, I will have to stop and pick up where I left off before finishing an entry. Today, I had written about the plastic surgery phone call and then worked on some other tasks before coming back to talk about my race experience. During that time I received a phone call that I was unable to answer because I was with a weight loss patient and my phone is on silent. Upon checking my voicemail, I discovered that the lady who works for the plastic surgeon had called to let me know that she had emailed the Dr. and that they wanted to see if they could help me out any further with costs for the procedures I’d like to have done. My first thought was “God is so good to me!” and then “Who does that? Who calls and offers to make things more affordable!?” I am so excited I can’t stand it. I didn’t give up hope and even said as much up above in this entry; and then this happens! I have to believe that somehow this is going to work out for me. I can feel it. I don’t know how, but it’s going to,and I can’t wait to see how it all unfolds!

Fred Bear
Fred Bear
Article by The Knives Store
Fred Bear was born on March 5th, 1902 and passed away on April 27th, 1988. That was a sad day when the “father of bow hunting” passed away and left this earth for the big meadow in the sky.
Fred Bear helped to make bow hunting and hunting in general become a mainstream sport. He gave hunting a great name by the way he hunted and carried himself.
He became a legend after another great hunter, sportsman and musician Ted Nugent wrote a song about him. Ted Nugent and Fred Bear became great friends.
Bear traveled the world in pursuit of big game and filmed his kills and hunts and are now legendary. He didn’t even start bow hunting until he was 29 years of age which just goes to show that it’s never too late and you can do anything that you set your mind to.
Archery was Bear’s life-long passion. He played a key role in promoting a bow-hunting season in Michigan back in 1936. He became an expert marksman and won the state’s target archery championship in 1934, 1937 and 1939. He also became a regular on the sports show circuit, inspiring experienced bowmen and novices alike with his natural shooting skills.
Whenever a bow hunter hears the name “Fred Bear” they get inspired to hunt and to practice their archery. He made bow hunting cool and helped establish some of the first bow hunting seasons in America. His is also famous for his archery company that he helped start and helped run right up until his death in 1988.
We as hunters and sportsmen owe a lot to Fred Bear for what he did for the hunting industry. Sometimes it’s unnerving to think where our hunting rights would be without Fred Bear. Whenever you get a chance I recommend everyone to check out the Fred Bear museum in Springfield, MO.

Aircraft warning lights
Aircraft warning lights
Lamp types
Structure using a white strobe
Structure using a Red/White Strobe
Closeup of an aircraft warning light on top of a highrise in Changzhou, China
Structure using high intensity white lights and a medium intensity white strobe
The lights generally come in two forms:
Red lamps that are either constantly illuminated or turn on and off slowly in a cycle of a few seconds.
White xenon discharge flashers.
Both types were in use in the United Kingdom until recently, however new regulations stipulate the use of red lamps at nighttime only. Xenon flashers are therefore gradually being phased out.
In the United States and Canada, there are several types of lights:
Obstruction lights (that are constantly illuminated)
Red Beacons/Red strobes
High Intensity White (Strobe) Lights
Medium Intensity White (Strobe) Lights
Traditionally, red lamps (or beacons) use incandescent filament bulbs. In order to improve the otherwise quite short lifespan, they are made with a ruggedised design and are run below normal operating power (under-running). A recent development has been the use of arrays of high power red LEDs in place of incandescent bulbs, which has only been possible since the development of LEDs of sufficient brightness. LED based lamps have a significantly longer lifespan than incandescent bulbs, thus reducing maintenance costs and increasing reliability. Several manufacturers have also developed medium intensity white strobes based on LED technology to replace Xenon.
Xenon flashers, whilst more visually impressive, tend to require frequent replacement and so have become a less favoured option. However, with the advent of LEDs, white strobes are still somewhat desired.
It is common to find structures with white xenon flashers/white strobes during the daytime, and red lights at night. Red lights are commonly found to be used in urban areas, since it is easier for pilots to spot them from above. White strobes (that flash 24/7) may also be used in urban areas. However, it has been recommended that flashing white strobes should not be used in densely populated areas; the lights usually merge with background lighting at nighttime, making it difficult for pilots to spot them and thereby aggravating the hazard. In addition, residents near the lit structure will complain of light trespass.
In rural areas, red beacons/strobes may also be used during nighttime. However, white strobes are (sometimes) preferred since it reduces maintenance cost (i.e. no maintenance of painting, no red side lights) and there are no background lights that would blend with the strobes.
For white strobes, there is a medium intensity white strobe and a high intensity white strobe. Medium Intensity White Strobes are usually used on structures that are between 200500 feet (61-152.4 meters). If a medium white strobe is used on a structure greater than 500 feet (152.4 meters), the structure must be painted.
The common medium white strobe flashes 40 times in a minute, at an intensity of 20,000 candelas for daytime/twilight, and 2,000 candelas at nighttime.
]]>
A high intensity white strobe light is used on structures that are greater than 500 feet (152.4 meters). These lights provide the highest visibility both day and night. Unlike a medium strobe, a high intensity strobe doesn’t provide 360 coverage; this requires the use of at least 3 high strobes at each level. On the other hand, it reduces maintenance costs (i.e. no painting). If the structure has an antenna at the top that is greater than 40 feet, a medium intensity white strobe light must be placed above it rather than below.
The common high white strobe flashes 40 times in a minute, at an intensity of 270,000 candelas for daytime, 20,000 candelas at twilight, and 2,000 candelas at night-time.
Dual lighting is where a structure is equipped with white strobes for daytime use, and red beacons/strobes for nighttime use. In urban areas, these are commonly preferred since it usually exempts a structure from the requirement of having to be painted. One advantage to the dual system is that when the uppermost red lights fail, the lighting switches onto its Backup lighting system, which uses the white strobes (at its night intensity) for nighttime. In the United States and Canada, red beacons are slowly going out of commission and being replaced with red strobes. In addition, some medium strobes are equipped to flash the white light for daytime and red light for night in a single strobe (unlike the old type which had two different lights).
For high tension power lines, the white strobes are equipped to flash 60 times per minute, using the same intensities as stated above. Unlike the common white strobes, these strobes are specified not to flash simultaneously. The flash pattern should be middle, top, and bottom to provide “a unique system display”.
On aircraft
An antenna tower stands 446 feet tall in Springfield, MO with its red and white aircraft warning paint clearly visible in the setting sun.
Aircraft use collision avoidance lighting systems to warn other aircraft of their presence. These lights include landing lights, white beacons, wingtip strobes, and wingtip navigation lights. The wingtip navigation lights are required to consist of a red light on the left wingtip and a green light on the right wingtip. Landing lights are used during the descent and approach to landing, and at other times if deemed necessary by the flight crew or operator.
Use and positioning
These lights can generally be found attached to any tall structure such as broadcast masts and towers, water tanks located on high elevation, electricity pylons, chimneys, tall buildings, cranes and wind turbines. Shorter structures that are located close to airports may also require lighting. The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) sets standards, usually adopted worldwide, for the performance and characteristics of aviation warning lamps.
Lights are usually arranged in clusters of two or more around the structure at specific heights on the tower. Frequently there will be a set at the top, and then one or more sets equally spaced down the structure. England’s Belmont mast (the tallest construction in the European Union) has nine clusters of red lamps spaced equally along the full height of the mast.
Non-standard aircraft warning lights
On some tall structures there are or were non-standard aircraft warning lights installed
The mast of Deutschlandsender Herzberg/Elster had no aircraft warning lamps installed. It was instead lit by skybeamers mounted on small masts near the tower. This method was chosen as the mast was a mast radiator insulated against ground and for feeding the lamps on the mast otherwise special devices like Austin transformers would be required.
Stuttgart TV Tower carries rotating lamps like used on lighthouses. Such lamps were also used on other towers in earlier days.
Blosenbergturm in Beromnster has a rotating lamp above the cabin. In opposite to Stuttgart TV Tower it is less bright and only operated in the dawn.
The main mast of Mhlacker radio transmitter and the former Konstantynow Radio Mast has or have also aircraft warning lights at the outmost bases of their anchor guys.
Conductor marking lights and Balisors are sometimes used for marking power lines.
The Obstacle Collision Avoidance System allows the standard lights to remain off until an aircraft is in within a given radius, allowing for a significant decrease in light pollution. The OCAS system also provides audio warnings.
Aircraft Warning Paint
Aircraft warning paint usually consist of red and white paint at equal lengths on the antenna tower or mast. These sections of paint are usually only required on towers over 300 feet tall, but may vary from state to state and near airports internationally. These paints are usually expensive to apply and that’s why the perferred height of an antenna tower or mast is usually right under that certain height requirement. These antenna towers or masts that have these paintjobs usually almost always have some sort of aircraft warning feature located at equal sections and at the top of the antenna tower or mast. These are usually high powered strobe lights or LED lights that are either red, white, or both colors (differing in color at different parts of the day, red most likely being at night and a white strobe in the day.

Each Spring many Missouri residents experience the arrival of the Ants. Ants awaken from bedding down most of the winter. Worker Ants go into overdrive foraging for food to insure their colonys survival and continued growth. It becomes clear at this point that Spring is here and warmer weather is not far behind.
No wonder that Ants love Missouri Residents. We love our homes, and so do they. Each Spring we get “antsy” (pardon the pun) planting pretty flowers, topping off mulch beds and feeding our lawns. Which in turn becomes the perfect habitat for Ants to get up close and personal to our homes. All home perimeters in Missouri have Ants. It is estimated that the ants out weigh the human population. Due to landscaping some homes will experience Ant invasions more than others.
There is nothing more irritating than opening a kitchen cabinet to find that hundreds of Ants have made themselves welcome to your food, or have covered you countertop and sink. At this point many homeowners will attempt to rid the uninvited guest themselves by way of baits, bait traps and sprays. Which can decrease the Ant population temporarily. Many of these products are detected as poision by the ants, which will only cause them to move to another entry point or even trap them in walls, attics and crawlspaces. Repellant chemicals and indoor baits can cause remote colonys to emerge from the original colony, and ultimately cause an increase in the Ant population, instead of the original goal, which was to eradicate them.
]]>
So how do I get rid of my Ants?
Homeowner Tips:
Make landscaping less attractive to Ants: use rubber mulch, gravel, rock or other noncellulose material
Trim tree branches way from house
Stack fire wood away from house
Keep trash cans at least ten feet from house
Remove leaves and grass clippings from around the homes foundation
Caulk any known entry points especially around plumbing and air conditioners, check all door and window seals.
Keep pet food in sealed containers
If an invasion occurs:
Clean up the Ant trails with a soapy mixture of 25-35% dish soap and 75-65% water. This is a great knock down tool. Do not use repellant spray indoors.
Do not bait indoors. Baits are attractants. Try using baits outdoors drawing the ants away from the home. Granular baits and prebaited stations are a better choice.
Try to locate the nest. This is the best method but not always possible.
Ant management is rarely that simple. Sometimes the nest cannot be located or there are multiple nests. For example the Pharoh Ant, can have have hundreds of nests in a small area. Nonrepellant chemicals with a transfer effect is by far the best treatment on the market. (currently not available for purchase or application by the public) So if all else fails, call a professional. She spoke with TheBestlife.com’s Janis Jibrin, R.D. about her past struggles with weight gain and how she finally found her way to a healthier and happier life.
Were you overweight as a child? And tell us about your weight history as an adult.
I was a little chubby as a kid, and after one teasing episode on the school bus I went on my first restrictive diet. I was 11-years-old, 5 foot 4 inbches, and 121 pounds. I lost 21 pounds by limiting calories to 700 to 750 per day. I gradually gained it back and by high school was 165 to 180 pounds. I got above “the deuce” 200 pounds in college, peaking at 215. My senior year I went on the Cambridge Diet 330 calories a day for three weeks and ended college at 165 pounds. But I was back to 180 pounds by the time I started nutrition grad school in the fall. Grad school is where the weight skyrocketed, peaking at 258 in my mid-20s. At age 26, I went on Optifast and lost 70 pounds, but continued to yo-yo, hitting 258 again in 2002.
Besides the liquid diets, have you been on any others?
Good Lord, I did all of em! Weight Watchers, Scarsdale, Atkins, calorie counting, a meat and sherry diet that was a weird one meal replacement bars, Nutri System, Diet Center, hypnosis, Jenny Craig. I also devised my own diets, using the exchange system. A doctor at the health center on my college campus actually had me fast four days a week.
On most of these diets, I would lose some weight, but gain it back and then some. I tended to try restrictive eating, often skipping breakfast and sometimes lunch. Then I’d get so hungry I’d binge when I got home from school/work. Id decide I’d “blown it” and eat all the things I was going to deprive myself of on the diet that would start the next day. I called it the “Cycle of Dieting.”
How did Bob Greene help you get out of the dieting and yo-yoing rut?
I read Bobs book, Make the Connection, and realized I was going at it all wrong. But I didnt like myself enough to do it the right way. I was too desperate to lose weight quickly, and being an R.D. (registered dietitian) just added to the pressure.
Then I saw Bob on the January 2003 Oprah show and that’s when I finally internalized what I knew in my head that I needed to change the way I lived. I needed to have enough self-worth to take care of myself, and the weight wasn’t the primary issue. I made a firm decision it was time to take charge of my life.
How did you put Bobs concepts into practice?
As he recommends, I first got a handle on emotional eating. I spent a long time in that phase. And I followed his natural progression and concepts.
But at first I was not in a situation where I could make major lifestyle changes. I was a faculty member at a California university, facing a semester with a near-impossible workload of courses and graduate student theses. So I decided to do what Bob says: wait until I was ready to change. I started to see a nutrition counselor, not for the nutrition advice, but for the support in learning to make myself a priority. I laid the groundwork emotionally, then that summer, which I called the “Summer of Cindy.” I made taking care of myself my first priority. My first step: increase activity by doing something I loved walking on the beach. Next, I change my eating habits and stopped drinking regular soda. I dropped about 30 pounds in two to three months with just that one change.
I didnt weigh myself much about once a month in order to take the focus off weight, which always had made me nuts. The weight was just a consequence of something bigger. I gradually improved my eating habits and increased exercise, until I got up to working out most days of the week for one to one and a half hours, lifting weights, and doing cardio. I never completely deprived myself of any food, except regular soda, because the deprivation made me want it that much more.
That was three years ago; how has it been going since?
Im 43 years and now weigh 145 pounds. Thats more than 100 pounds less than before. There are still eating habits I’m working on, but I eat a zillion times better than I did five years ago, much better than three years ago, and hopefully next year I’ll eat better than I do now.
Its been helpful to understand my physiology. I come from a family with a lot of obesity, so I need plenty of exercise. I look at exercise not just as working out, but as physical therapy. It’s something that’s not an option.
What is it about Bobs approach that works for you?
He makes me consider the whole picture. Hes helped me realize I am an emotional eater and to deal with that. I use alternative coping mechanisms and some cognitive restructuring so things dont bug me so much. Hes helped me understand I have a genetic tendency to gain weight easily and thus must be diligent about exercise.
I like his non-diet approach that was important for me. I needed to change the way I lived, not go on another diet.
What’s been hardest about losing weight and keeping it off?
It’s hard to let go of your coping mechanism. I’ve been better about exercise than eating, but the exercise gives me more leeway in my eating. Ive had to learn to take better care of myself, like learning to say no, which is tough. I had to overcome a victim mentality and realize I had a choice in how to live my life. Changing my approach to life, putting myself first was, and still is, hard. I’m a perfectionist who tries too hard to be liked by everyone and have to force myself not to work too hard.
What’s been the best part?
Physically, I don’t think I could feel any better. I have great endurance and strength. I have tons of energy, and have a much busier social life. And I’m a lot happier. I feel good about myself and believe I’m living a meaningful life and have inherent value. I do have low self-esteem days still, and have insecurities in some areas, but I am happier than most people.
Anything you’d like to share with others to help them lose weight, or to motivate them to eat better and exercise more?
Exercise is absolutely essential for me. Some days I dont feel like working out, so I tell myself Ill just do a light workout, and that gets me to the gym. Once Im there, I always do the full workout. Weight lifting has made a big difference; its transformed the shape of my body.
And my iPod has made a huge difference. I have upbeat music with a good tempo, which energizes me, makes the workout seem so much easier, better, and quicker. When youre 100 pounds overweight, exercise is not comfortable at first. But keep in mind it gets more comfortable and easier as you go along.
Im okay with not being perfect now, in both my eating habits and as a human being. I no longer freak out if I dont eat well. I still struggle some days and go through periods where Ive overcommitted and slip into the victim mentality. But now when I get really stressed out, I say to myself, What do I need to do to take care of myself? I had to realize that I have inherent value and deserve to live the best life.

A New Box Dumper is Just What My Business Needed to Succeed
A New Box Dumper is Just What My Business Needed to Succeed
Article by Wally Fulter
I own an industrial waste company in Springfield, Mo. I am constantly looking for ways to improve workplace productivity, improve the quality of our projects and, of course, save a few bucks. Since my business has grown significantly over the past three years, I’ve decided to start shopping around for new industrial equipment.
I started my search with Nationwide Industrial Supplies. I’ve heard great things about them from other people in the industry, so I felt comfortable trusting my businesses’ needs with them.
Once I found their website, I was blown away at the size of their inventory! They had everything I needed, plus several other things that I had no idea I needed. I really wanted to check out their selection of box dumpers, pallet lifts and ladders. The dumper that I am currently using isn’t nearly large enough to support all of the waste that we go through on a daily basis, and I really needed something larger. A new and improved box dumper has been at the top of my business list for quite some time. After searching through all of the products available at Nationwide Industrial Supply, I decided to purchase a Gaylord box dumper. It had great reviews, and is supposed to be a state of the art piece that will revolutionize the industry. This was perfect for my growing business. I decided on this particular product because I needed something that would be able to grow with my company, rather than my company growing out of it.
The Gaylord box dumper had everything I wanted:
A weight capacity of 2000 pounds, so even my heaviest loads won’t be a problem. A dump height of 36 inches A huge chute width of 51.5 inches, and a chute length of 50 inches 64 inches of frame width
In addition to all of the awesome details, it was reasonably priced and shipped extremely fast. By the end of the week, I had my new box dumper set up in the warehouse and working great. It was easy for the employees to get used to as well; everyone keeps talking about how great it works and how simple it is to operate. I recommend Nationwide Industrial Supplies to all of my friends in the industry. Their huge selection of products, great prices, fast shipping and outstanding customer service make them a must have resource for my business.
